At 14, Sushil joined the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. Sushil’s family could afford to support only one of their kids pursuing wrestling and his cousin had to give up his dreams to support Sushil’s. His father, who was a driver, was a wrestler himself and he was a source of inspiration for Sushil, who took to the mat right from his early days. Sushil had come from a family that struggled economically. The pehalwanji enjoyed superstar status and investors and advertisers who were associated with the support needed him to be their face. He was, more often than not, available on call for scribes and picked and chose his words during interactions with the media. Sushil was there to not just support fellow wrestlers but encouraged young athletes from other wrestlers. At least it seemed so as Sushil always made sure he had time for fans who thronged stadiums to catch a glimpse of him. At the peak of his career, Sushil made sure success did not get to his head.
